National Games: The Need for an Update

First thing is an update on the event required? In a country which has longed for success on an Olympic level for ages this must be an event to look for. But it seldom tries to capture the attention of a considerable audience.

But the 33rd National Games are much different. It not only showcases the amazing spirit of all the Assamese people who against all odds made the show run, it also brings into foray the amazingly talented and much neglected region of the country, the North-East. The region pulled apart by forces of under-development and liberation movement (I won’t write much on it as it can be a biased opinion) National Games bring pride and a chance to shine on the National Stage.

So when the 33rd National Games were inaugurated it was a triumphant movement for all the people there. And Manipur has made the North-East proud by signaling a power shift in Indian Sports, from Punjab to Manipur the story seems to be an amazing one. The time of writing this post Manipur has already won 43 golds, followed by Services and the Hosts Assam on third spot. Till the games close on 18th Feb we are ready for a new winner this time it seems.

In Athletes, Rehan Poncha from Karnataka and Richa Mishra from Delhi have made a mark on the National Stage with 6 Golds each. Rameshwori Devi Chabungbam from Naipur has emerged as the new star on the cycling scene with 5 Golds. An 11-year-old schoolgirl gymnast from Andhra Pradesh Aruna B is another futre star to look out for. She has startled the audience with her performance and won Silver in a Sport not considered to be any good for Indians till date.

Hope these National Games put up some of our athletes on the Success Radar.

National Games go on but the thing is that should we follow it. It’s a confusing question but follow it for the spirit not only of the Athletes who cross so many roadblocks to make us proud someday but also for the people of Assam who have overcome lot of hurdles to make it possible. Keep looking at this space for updates.
