PHL Season Ends…

World Cup kicked of yesterday but in the midst of all we forgot that PHL season ended last week. Another attempt to bring back the old Days of Hockey ended with very less achieved infact.

Orissa Steelers beat Sher-e-Jalandhar in the finals to lift the cup, but seriously the crowd count in stadiums this time was something to look for throughout the tournament. It was quite less than the previous seasons and in few matches you could just spot the Ground staff and noone else.

By the way the finals were quite an affair, with a crowd of 15000 coming to see the showdown between teams from Jalandhar and Orissa. Though the somewhat-home team succumbed to a defeat but still the crowd should have been pleased with kind off hockey on display quite apt for the final. Dilip Tirkey the old standpoint of Indian Hockey was declared the Player of the tournament. Gagan Ajit Singh with 15 goals was the highest scorer in tournament.

Though I didn’t follow the season much but still for an Indian Sports fan much is left desired. In a period just before the world Cup when good cricket telecast was going through a dry spell surely PHL should have generated more excitement than before. It’s hard to imagine when will the glory-days of Indian hockey will be back.

For now, I have stopped thinking. But PHL is still an attempt worthy of a good praise.

Speaking Cricket

Last week I was at home for my holi vacations and watched some TV there and found lot of cricket talks going on. Its not a different site in India with news and other channels roping in ex-players and experts for their shows.
One channel has roped in experts from Pakistan: Imran Khan , SA: Barry Richards, India: Ajay Jadeja and from Australia also. They were discussing what strategies should India use in their games of Super 8's to defeat the biggies Aus and SA and other teams also. In the end they were asked to rate India's chances of victory against various team. To my surprise every body gave 9 out 10 chances to India's match against England. I don't know why they thought so probably because of England's week bowling.

Other channel was interviewing the Chief Selector Dilip Vengsarkar and poped out the news of selection of various players despite selectors disapproval of them. Sehwag was one of them Vengsarkar said he was selected only on request of Dravid. Ohh great , since when do the captains have got the right to select players. Kumble was the other one.
In john's autobiography Indian Summers I came to know what happens in a particular selection meeting, how selectors argue to get a player from their zone selected.

Another channel were questioning Niranjan Shah about the Vengsarkar's statement. He questioned the chief selectors right to give such comments in public.

Two channels NDTV and CNN-IBN were interviewing forgotton and again revived like a pheonix player Saurav Ganguly. I couldn't control my happiness when I heard his desire of becomming the coach some time later in his life. I used to dream of dada becoming a selector then BCCI chief after some years and taking revenge for what happen to him last year. But dada don't need that now he has come much stronger and proved once again why he is idol of many persons around the world. Dada has proven the quote of Mohammad Ali
"The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses, behind the lines and the gyms out there on the roads long before I dance under those lights."
His hard work dedication and love for cricket and faith in himself has helped him come back even stronger. I wish dada to become the second player after Geoff Marsh to lift the cup as a player and coach , for that India need to win the Cup this WC.
Dada we are proud of you!!!

Greg was also being interviewed by another channel and he gave a punch line Let's do it guys.

Nike ad and other products endorsed by cricket celebrities was also getting aired regularly and new songs encouraging Indian team to lift the cup were taking bigger air time in the music channel shows.

After so much talking cricket ... Lets watch Indian Juggernaut roll in West Indies

3 days to go

Let's do it team

Why do people like Chelsea and jose?

The blog could also have been like “Why do people hate Chelsea?”, but for many of the so- called "regulars at the EPL", the question is unanswerable, very instinctive, visceral, something that is as trivial vis a' vis the process of breathing itself. Whenever a newcomer(a viewer that is) starts to feel the heat of the premiership, the natural instincts drive his loyalty towards the stronger teams having good players. For me, an Indian by origin, who had all the options to choose from, chose to be a partisan of Manchester United F.C. only because it had the great names like David Beckham,Ruud Van Nistelrooy and the legendry Roy Keane. Manchester United is not a team that was built in a day. ManU like other great teams has a history to be proud of. It took a couple of months for the interest to metamorphose into passion.
The most challenging part vis a' vis managing a football team is to build the team. Manchester United, Arsenal, etc. are already have elite ranked players. The job of managers of the teams who come in place of the relegated teams are perhaps the most difficult. They are not rich clubs. Perhaps their full year’s tranfer budget is less than a week’s wage budget of a rich team like Chelsea. Managing such teams is a challenge. Even teams like ManU and Arsenal have budget restraints.
Ever since Chelsea was bought by Roman Abramovich for 60 million pounds in 2003, the clubs fortune has changed. The club’s gaffer has invested over 300 million dollars and has incurred losses of 100 million dollars to the club. As far as Mr. Abramovich is concerned, it is no more than buying his children peanuts on a hang out. So forget the fact that Jose Mourinho is no businessman. The prodigal gaffer has time n’ time again created new records in the transfer market. The Andriy Shevchenko transfer has topped all EPL records at 30 million pounds. No other manager in the world will pay 30 million pounds for a 29 year old striker. Then again, with Ricardo Carvalho -27 million dollars, Essien- 24 million pounds, etc. and there are records still to be broken. There is nothing in the transfer market that money cannot buy, for everything else there is Mr. Roman Abramovich.
The real fans of football want to watch good football. We want to watch players who have a talent to develop into world class players. But what happens when a talent goes in a team where it is not recognised.Chelsea, undoubtedly, has one of the most deadliest squads in the world. But in the process what it is doing is keeping talented players away from the field. An epitome of the same is Shaun Wright Phillips. One of the main reasons of his exclusion from the England world cup squad is because Sir Sven Goran didnt have enough of his on field performances to look at.
Having the world’s best coaches to teach the world’s best talents, having the world’s best scouts to find the world’s best raw talents.Keeping world class players at every position and for also for the back up positions of the team doesnt test the manager’s skills. All you have to do is let them out in the field and there is always a very low probability that they’ ll loose. Even a ten year old can manage a team like that.
So where does Jose Mourinho come in…??? The prodigal gaffer!!!All in all, for a team like Chelsea, whose wage budget exceeds many team’s transfer budget,it is not the manager but the perennial river Moolah flowing that manages and wins matches.

USACA Suspended from ICC

Few days back Giri posted a nice article on the professionalism of americans in cricket. I was hoping that if this sort of professionalism continues we will soon be watching USA playing cricket with the test playing nations. I was dreaming of USA winning the 2016 20Twenty WC.

But my hopes were dashed when i read that International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended the United States of America Cricket Association (USACA). USACA was suspended for its failure to meet the deadlines for adoption of its constitution and holding of elections.

Malcolm Speed, the ICC Chief Executive, said that the USA's suspension
"occurs at a time when many objective observers strongly believe that the game in the USA is sufficiently strong to warrant USA being included in the ICC Cricket World Cup which commences this month"
which emphasises the frustration many must feel in the USA.

This is a big jolt to the ICC's hope of entering the big market of USA . There were even news of staging a tournament between India and Australia but that couldn't be solemenized as there is no stadium of international standards in USA.

USACA will now not receive the annual ICC grant that was expected on April 15 and will be withdrawn from the World Cricket League Division 3 Series to be held in Darwin, Australia in May and relegated from that division. WI cricket board has been appointed to monitor the progress of the game and request a suitable time for the removal of the ban

"The ICC hopes this measure will serve to focus minds within cricketing circles in the USA, that sense will prevail and that all those with the good of the game at heart will come together and take control of this unfortunate situation."
I hope for the growth of Cricket ban on USACA will be lifted soon
