Arsenal review-preview, Ashes preview, Dementieva and F-1 news

Arsenal left it late to round off three points against a dogged West Ham side which looked like anything but a team placed at the bottom of the league. The win keeps the gunners in sight of league leaders Chelski (5 points adrift). The gunners hardly got out of second gear in the first half. Arshavin has been the most disappointing player for us this season.Arseblog makes a detailed analysis of how Arshavin has performed this season. I dont know if he needs some Vodka before the match, but if he does not step up his game, Walcott could soon replace him from the starting line-up. Our only decent chance in the first half was when Sagna pulled away from the West Ham left back and centred a cross from a Song-thru-ball. The strike from Cesc was also good, but Rob Green pulled off a really good save to deny us. (Wasn't this the keeper whose howler against US gifted thema point in the WC) We were much better in the second half, showed a lot more urgency. Nasri rattled the crossbar with a free-kick which surprised one and all in the ground. It was a superbly disguised free-kick from him with only a two-step run-up. Green was beaten but the crossbar denied Arsenal. Then, Theo was released by another beautifully weighted ball from Nasri and his shot across the goalie hit the post and came back straight to Rob Green. We looked destined for a draw when Clichy cut in from the left and dinked a delightful ball for Song to head and send the Emirates to ruptures. It was not a typical Arsenal-performance but most importantly we got 3 vital points to keep up with the league leaders.

Wilshere, meanwhile, has signed a new contract. This was, although expected, vital for us as he and Ramsey are very much the future for us (especially considering that Cesc could leave us anytime). Against Shakhtar, looks like Cesc and Song are sidelined with injuries (minor injuries, hopefully!!). So, Wilshere will be back in place of Song. And either Diaby or Rosicky will come in for Fabregas with the posibility of Nasri taking the position of Cesc. Also, as mentioned earlier Walcott could come in place of Arshavin. The rest of the team, I would expect it to be the same.

In the lead up to the Ashes, Kevin Pieterson, following his poor form, has been, surprise surprise, targeted by many Aussies. He has not responded to them, but instead, he has come out trying to shift the attention, saying that he
empathises with Rooney, likening his own situation with the United centre forward. He refused to comment back to Ponting's comments that there was a big "question mark" over his form. Rooney's is probably a much worse situation than his, for he has been involved in sex-scandals and obviously the contract issues with Man-yoo.

Elena Dementieva has announced retirement from Tennis. She is considered to be the one who revolutionised and inspired women's tennis in Russia. Her sudden and emotional
announcement after her loss to Schiavonne in Doha surprised a lot people. She was considered to be one of the "nicest people" in the tour and the pessimist in me says that could be the reason for her not to a single Grand Slam!!

Former FIA President Max Mosley said that a title win for Fernando Alonso by less than seven points would
devalue his F1 title. He won the Korean grand prix in controversial circumstances and was "allowed" to win. Massa was leading the race, when Ferrari ordered him to allow Alonso to race past him and win the race as the Spaniard is leading the F1 charts. The Ferrari team was charged $100,000 by FIA. If you really want to hurt a team, sportsman then fines are not really the answer. The only way to hurt a team is by docking points or not allowing the offender to participate in the next match/race.

Formula One : Lets get into Zooom Vroom mode

The year of night Formula One, once again it will be proved how genius a man is. Getting a race at 350Km/hr speed beamed live whole over the world in night will be a jewel in the crown of F1. To me it is the second most awaited event in the year after Beijing Olympics. Few days back I read somewhere almost all the hotels have been booked for the September event and tickets will are also expected to be sold in frenzy.
Valencia the other new circuit will take the street racing to three races the other two being the lovely Monaco and Singapore.

Last year it was a two way battle between McLaren and Ferrari . BMW also showed some fight. So what we can expect in 2008.

  • With Alonso coming back to Renault , expecting a fight back by Renault
  • McLaren and Ferrari coming out strongly as expected
  • Hamilton winning the 2008 season
  • Rookies Sebastien Bourdais, Nelson Piquet Jnr, Kazuki Nakajima bringing in more energy and passion to the game.
  • BMW making it a 4 way battle
  • More eyes watching the zooming cars as Formula one travels to new lands of Singapore and Valencia
  • More Indians watching Formula because of India team Force India
  • With qualifying time of first round increased to 20 and the third round decreased to 10, it will make the qualifying more exciting
  • Now some very rare chances Force India scoring a point or two.
  • I want Toyota and Honda to come good as in last year despite spending around $400 million they were pathetic.
  • Overall according to me F1 will touch new heights and will start moving out of its traditional base of Europe as more Asians will be gluing their eyes to the beautiful race of F1

Get Set Go :)

Sports Updates

I would define the later half of the july as dull period for sports, one big event was the awesome European F1. I saw for the first time race being red flagged all due to the rain gods which are angry on whole of the world of sports it seems specially in Europe, England is reeling under floods first it was Wimbledon now its India-England Test Series.

But off the fields there is lot of happenings going on.

Talking about Football : Pre season tours of EPL teams are in the last stages ManU , Liverpool all came down to South East Asia and China for expanding the EPL and may be money for pre season team builds up. All thanks to the professionalism of EPL organizers who have expanded the popularity of EPL to almost whole of Asia and now its have become profitable to be compared to American NBA and NHL leagues, EPL is far ahead in terms of viewership.

Transfers is in full flow with last 2-3 days left. Tevez saga has not yet been cleared if he stays in WestHam he will be joined by another Arsenal great Freddie Ljungberg who has left Arsenal another big exit after Henry. Mourinho is trying to avoid Robben from going to Real Madrid, Kaka has made it clear that he will remain in AC Milan.

Manchester city has been brought by ex Thailand Premier Shinowatra and has pumped in 100 million dollars to Sven Erricson new manager for transfer. Big money spending is done by almost all the teams in the EPL.

Beckham made his lackluster debut in LA-Galaxy against Chelsea, he is injured and will miss the initial 2-3 matches of LA, Giri can give more updates on the Beckham from US.

In the AFC whole of Iraq has been united by its splendid performance in the competition , it has reached the finals and will face Saudi Arabia. Big teams of Asia Japan, Korea have been kicked out, even Australia has not felt that its not easy playing football in Asia as the team studded will players who play in EPL also couldn't do anything.

Indian football is also trying to improve its game, team is touring Portugal and is playing matches against League 3/2, thanks to fine display by bhutia it has won 2 matches also.

Moving over to India's religion Cricket:

Star Cricket, they are saying they have reached 75% of ESPN-Star Sports coverage, i don't know how, my cable wala is not showing it. Its not in half of haryana and many parts of UP. Cable guy said they are demanding 8 Lakhs, he said its not worth spending for test matches only as the ODI's will come on DD1 itself. Great :)

India's famed line failed again in Lords, dk has already written about that. In second test bowlers have performed well despite of rain England is on backfoot at 167/7 .

Off the field ICL is slowly bulding up. Lara is coming Warne and McGrath are also expected to join. Sportscenter rumors say Fleming has also been offered a lucrative deal to join. With the league being run by ex-players and professionals not by unknowledgable politicians in case of BCCI we can expect it to promote cricket and provide good players for Indian cricket. Some of the lashings players are also expected to join. If planned properly i feel the T20 T20 format can become very popular and we can expect like county and even like WI, T20 leagues.

T20 world cup has been launched in SA. The 13-day event will have 12 nations compete in 27 matches for one trophy. It starts from September 11 with matches being played in Johannesburg, Capetown and Durban. I am looking forward to the cup as my interest in 50 overs format is at all time low. Music, cheer boys and girls it will be all exciting. To the top of the excitement India has been placed with Pakistan in group D, other team being Scotland. Australia are in Group B along with England and Zimbabe, while hosts South Africa have been teamed up with West Indies and Bangladesh in Group A. New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Kenya constitute Group C. India play Pakistan on September 14.

F1

Mclarean is cleared of all the charges of stealing Ferrari's documents, there will be no punishment and points deductions.

18 race calender for 2008 has been announced by FIA with two new entrants Singapore and Valencia and there will be no race in USA.

Last race was awesome though i couldn't watch the whole race, Hamilton was without points for the first time, ups and downs do happen to all. Alonso showed why he is still the best when he overcame Massa with only few laps remaining.

Kartikeyan chances of driving again for spyker were dealt a blow when Sakon Yamamoto was signed by spyker, money is the only reason seems to me as he has given around 33 crores rupees to driver the Spyker car and spyker needs money badly.

In other sports Tour De France has become Dope De France, doping has again affected the event, I reckon the event to be the toughest in the world, cycling association should take some stringent measures to stop the doping saga affecting the event every year. If Armstrong can do it 7 times without doping (though charges were also raised against him but not proved) why can't others do it.

In tennis hard court season has begun Sania is participating in tier 3/4 events and performing well. Great ..... Do you see any chances of here getting into top 10 in coming year ????

In other sports political news IOA is fighting with sports ministry over some sports policy which the ministry is framing to encourage the sports. IOA is complaining that ignoring it is unethical. Well to me the policy will not do anything IOA supremo Kalmadi who has been at the helm for the past 2 decades has done nothing and with meagre 500 crores sports budget the ministry expect to win golds!!!!! hahahhahhaha. We hire cheap coaches and many are not upto the marks , we compare ourselves to china LOL china spends millions and millions in sports and you will see China pipping USA handsomely in 2008 Olympics.

Comments expected!!!!

I have written about 4-5 sports so a small check of interest of readers

Grand Prix of India

India is finally looking to other sports apart from the religion which Indians follow 'cricket'.
IOA president Mr. Suresh Kalmadi confirmed that it has reached an agreement with F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone to stage F1 in New Delhi in 2009.

But disheartening news is that the race would not be a street race as earlier expected. A new track would be laid
Mr Kalmadi said
"we are looking to identify suitable land for a world-class track. It's a touch task, but we're hoping to meet the challenge"

Ecclestone in his letter to the IOA said, "F1 authorises IOA to back and support the move to get the infrastructure ready. It will be IOA's responsibility to get the support of the Government of India, Delhi government and other government agencies to get a circuit constructed at a site which is acceptable to the Formula One administration."

This is the fifth new venue to be added in the past few months. Valencia and Singapore will hold street races in 2008 with new venue Korea. Abu Dhabhi will enter with India in 2009.

This race would be a big boost to India's tourism before the 2010 commonwealth game. I would love to be the part of history by watching the first race in New Delhi. Where ever I would be I will try to be there to watch the zooming cars.

Would India be able to host a successful F1, build the track on time a lot is needed in infrastructure? I am sure we will.

So get set for sporting action in the coming years. Now we need to get some footballing action, may be Arsenal or ManU coming down in India for exhibition match.

Five Sporting Wishes

Sports fans here are my 5 sporting wishes. I would love to do these in coming 5-10-15-20 years, I hope these moments would come much sooner.

1. Watching Formula one race in Monaco. I love street racing and Monaco is the best street circuit till now. Delhi is expected to have a track around the Janpath, but you know how much time it takes in India. But Monaco rules.

2. Watch the Wimbledon final, yes wimbledon not any another Grandslam tournament. 120 year old tournament has its own class and I would love to be at the centre court watching the final.

3. Emirates Stadium... Gunners home my favourite club and watching them play ManU at their home would be icing on the cake.

4. Match at Lords .. mecca of cricket. Though my interest in cricket is slowly dying but still sitting at the stands in Lords and watching arch rivals England take on Australia in the Ashes test would be great.

5. Fifa World Cup Final, i hope its between brazil and argentina.

I have written what are yours

Ecstasy for some Agony for some : Montreal

In the end it was ecstasy for Hamilton, Heidfeld, Wurz and agony for Kubica, Massa , Fisichella in the action packed Montreal Grand Prix. It was the most chaotic formula one race I have ever watched since i started following F1 3 years back. Cars were crashing regularly safety car was in and out and then there was a horrific crash of Kubica. There were yellow flags green flags and black flags also.

Massa and Fisichella were shown black flags as they tried overtaking in the pits.

But the race belonged to Hamilton who despite of the fact that 4 times his lead was nullified because of safety car coming in , he still managed to win the race cleanly, there were no mistakes, his driving was faultless.

Singapore Night F1

Its confirmed now , Singapore will become the first country to host F1 in night next year i.e 2008. It will be an street race scheduled to take place some where in September and October next year. This is the second country to be added in the ever growing F1 circuit, Valencia confirmed few days back its own street grand prix next year.

Ecclestone said

“I am very pleased to welcome Singapore to the Formula 1 family and we look forward to this exotic addition to the championship,”

“This will be the first fully lit street race in Formula 1.

“As a night race we anticipate it will quickly establish itself as one of the most dramatic and atmospheric races on our calendar.

“I know the Formula 1 drivers, teams and fans are all looking forward to coming to Singapore next year.”

The race will take place on public roads around the downtown Marina Bay area, with the race proposals including powerful lighting systems that will replicate daylight conditions and stringent safety measures to ensure both driver and spectator safety.

“It will be more than just a motor race,” said Singapore's minister of state for trade and industry, Mr S Iswaran. “We envision it to be a national festival, and one that presents many opportunities for participation for everyone, both visitors and Singaporeans alike.

This is good news for the vast European fans who can now watch the race in a very suitable time.
Here in India rumors or you can say news that F1 round the Janpath in Delhi are increasing, I am eagerly waiting when will that news be confirmed . But one big question which comes in my mind why every event is being hosted in Delhi. Commonwealth in Delhi bid for Asiad in Delhi F1 in Delhi and I guess Olympics in Delhi. One reason which I can find out is funda of recycling invest for Commonwealth and then use the infrastructure for other big events. Common India is very big we can host in many other cities. Show the real India to outer world Delhi alone is not India.

Hamilton vs Alonso vs Kimi

It has become a three way battle now. Kimi Alonso and Hamilton are all tied at 22 points each in the 2007 F1 season. Lewis Hamilton who has now become the blue eyed boy of the F1 circuit with three back to back podium finish thus becoming the first driver in history. The gap between Mclaren and Ferrari is swinging like a pendulum with Australia going in favor of Ferrari , Malaysia going Mclaren way but in Bahrain the gap has closed any one could have one. Hamilton was just 2.5 seconds behind Massa. Even BMW is slowly closing in with its drivers finishing at 4th and 6th.Nick Heidfeld battled both Kimi and Alonso and finally overcame Alonso to finish 4th. Now get ready for European sojourn with challenging monaco 2 races away.

And congratulations to all those who polled for Massa 4 votes, 2 each for Kimi and Hamilton and 1 for Alonso

McLaren All the way :: Ferrari Toppled

privileged to post the 150th post, soon we will break the 200 run barrier :)

As i expected in the Sepang F1, it was Mclaren all the way from start of the race till the finish. I missed the qualification round due to some misunderstanting of the time, I read the Honkong time and was waiting eagerly for the qualification to start a 2.00pm IST, but in wain, ringed prasoon asking was there any delay ohh boy he told me it was already over and you know these Indian news channels who don't cover other then Cricket.
But today I was ready on time this time no mistake , awsome start I have ever seen since I started watching the F1 2-3 years back. Alonso pusing Massa back and Rookie Hamilton who drives like a pro pipping both Massa and Kimmi to make it 1 2 for Mclaren in the first sector of the first lap. Massa tried a lot to pip Hamilton and later on it was Kimi who pushed Hamilton hard but no hamilton was not a easy nut to crack and in the end it was 1 2 podium finish for Mclaren after long time.

Renault I guess has stopped investing in its car , I was shocked to see them starting at 11 and 12 place, but they some how salvaged some seeing Fisi at 6th. F1 guys efforts are showing up now , as now its not easy for ferraris and mclarens there is now slight difference between the cars , you can see the difference between them in the yesterday's qualifying.
Great Going F1
Lets move to Bahrain ........... Welcome to Arab World

Painful Weekend

Last two days were not good for cricket
Pakistan tumbled India trounced not good for indian and pakistani cricket fan.
I will not like millions of frustrated cricket fans will say bad words about the indian cricketers , just play your natural game even if we loose some wickets initially why you guys go into over cautious mode, score score it will ease the pressure. Give your best in the remaining matches and move into super 8's. Out of 22 votes we got 16 polled for India 2 each for Aus and SA and 1 for other. Now i am changing the poll will india reach super 8's.

Sudden Demise of Woolmer
I am shocked how it can happen. I can't believe so much stress can lead to his death. Coaching the subcontinents team is full of stress.

Retirement of Inzy from odi's
Great player we will miss you, but you deserved a better retirement.

Other bad thing was loss of Arsenal to Everton.
Gunners will beat ManU , Liverpool and even Chelsea but why loose to these teams.

Australian F1
Ferrari was fastest Kimi finished 17 seconds ahead. Exciting season waiting Mclaren and Ferrari fight , renault lacked the pace as of last years. BMW the dark horse team. Hamilton was awesome in his debut.

Raikkonen on Pole

Kimi Raikkonen started his stint with Ferrari with a pole position. Alonso had to content with 2nd position.

Session 1
McLaren and Super Auguri shined in this session. Alonso and Hamilton ended this session with 2 and 1 position respectively. Rookie driver Hamilton drove brilliantly. Honda and Toyota were struggling in this session, though Toyota managed to squeeze in but Honda's Barrichello ended at 17th. Surprise package of this session was the performance by Super Auguri's drivers Anthony Davidson and Takuma Sato. Japanese team car is basically a derivation of last year's Honda's car. BMW which struggled a lot in the last year came out with a splendid performance and Kubica and Heidfeld finished in top 6.

Kicked out:
17. BARRICHELLO Honda 1m27.679s

18. SPEED Toro Rosso 1m28.305s

19. COULTHARD Red Bull 1m28.579s

20. LIUZZI Toro Rosso 1m29.267s

21. SUTIL Spyker 1m29.339s
22. ALBERS Spyker 1m31.932s

Session 2
Massa's hopes of getting the first pole of season were quashed in this session when he faced gear box problem and couldn't complete a lap and will start at 16th. Two time champions Renault were lacking the edge to give some stiff fight to the Ferrari and McLaren. Funny incident took place in the session when the Trulli was in the pit lane getting his tyres changed and rear jack remained attached to his car. It was finally dislodged near the exit of the pit lane. Race stewards fined Toyota 2,000 euros ($2,665) for this incident. Button tried hard despite his struggling car but couldn't qualify for the last round. Auguri's Sato surprising all managed to qualify with 10th place.

Knocked out:

11. DAVIDSON Super Aguri 1m26.909s

12. ROSBERG Williams 1m26.914s

13. KOVALAINEN Renault 1m26.964s

14. BUTTON Honda 1m27.264s

15. WURZ Williams 1m27.393s

16. MASSA Ferrari no time

Session - 3

Raikkonen finished the exciting session with his 12th pole of the career. Alonso had to face stiff competition from his team mate Hamilton but the last year winner got the job done for the new and improved McLaren team with 2nd position. Hamilton qualified at 4th in his grand prix debut. BMW will be the team to watch for in 2007 , it has come up with a very improved car and the results were visible with both its players in top 5. Against all expectations after their difficult winter practice and struggling initial session, Toyota got both cars into the top ten. It was celebration time for Sato and Auguri as he finished in top 10.

Top 10

1. RAIKKONEN Ferrari 1m26.072s

2. ALONSO McLaren 1m26.493s

3. HEIDFELD BMW 1m26.556s

4. HAMILTON McLaren 1m26.755s

5. KUBICA BMW 1m27.347s

6. FISICHELLA Renault 1m27.634s

7. WEBBER Red Bull 1m27.934s

8. TRULLI Toyota 1m28.404s

9. SCHUMACHER Toyota 1m28.692s

10. SATO Super Aguri 1m28.871s

Ferrari planning to paint all Red

From Friday's testing it seems a reality. Massa is eyeing his forth pole position of his career. Ferrari drivers Massa and Kimi set the pace in today's practice and were ahead of McLaren and Renault. Raikkonen finished second to team mate Massa (1m 27.750s to 1m 27.353s).
Chances of total domination by Ferrari are less , with McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, Renault’s Giancarlo Fisichella and BMW Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld all were close.

"I would not put money on anybody (to be one pole), but hopefully people will put it on me, and they will win," Massa told reporters after practice.

Massa is confident of getting pole because of being quickest in the winter testing.
Let's see what happens tomorrow :)

F1 in FloodLights

night racing

We will soon be watching F1 drivers fighting in the night in flood lit circuits. According to F1 supremo Bernie one or two races are on cards by the end of this decade with most probable candidates are Japan and China or may be surprise Singapore.

F1 circuits designer Hermann Tilke has said that we have got enough knowledge of lighting and camera to stage a night race

“The basic problem is lighting,” he told the Autosport magazine.
“The tracks don’t need to change – you just need to have the space to install the lighting system.
“You also need a certain amount of brightness to allow TV cameras to show the cars property – not as blurry streaks!
“But there have been tremendous developments in lighting and camera technology, so I don’t see it being a problem.”

Night races in Asia will boost the viewership by the Europeans as it will then suite their timings, afternoon time. F1 will be following the Americans racing nascar, indyracing.

Meanwhile Alonso has expressed doubt regarding the safety of drivers driving at 300km/hr during night . He said that
"I did a demonstration in Valencia when we launched the car in January and it was at night and it was extremely difficult to see anything, to see the road.
Lets see will it be exciting or just wastage of more electricity. What are your views on this ??

This is seriously a noble initiative and a call to all the human beings of the earth to take an action before its too late.

Our car will race to create awareness of the environmental issues and to encourage people to make a difference to the world around them.

Sports Stars of 2006

Here is my pick for the players of 2006.

Fabio Cannavaro
There is no better defender the cannavaro at present, captained Itlay to lift the 2006 Fifa world cup playing his 100th international match. His performance against Germany in the World Cup Semi-Finals 2006 was earmarked as one of the finest individual performance ever seen in football by many pundits.
He earned a spot on the All-Star Team at the end of the competition - awarded by FIFA's Technical Study Group - alongside six other Italian teammates, Gianluigi Buffon, Gennaro Gattuso, Andrea Pirlo, Luca Toni, Francesco Totti and Gianluca Zambrotta.
He was runner up in the race for the Golden Ball, finishing runner-up to French captain Zinedine Zidane. Those who voted for Cannavaro felt that he had played immaculately throughout the tournament, while Zidane only shone in the knockout phase of the competition; it was a close contest with Zidane polling 2012 points to Cannavaro's 1977.
Presently he plays for Real Madrid, shifted from juventus after its relegation to Serie B.

Mohammad Yousuf

Mohammad Yousuf adumbrated any other cricket achievements of this year by breaking one of the longest standing records of all times most runs in a calender year by Sir Viv Richards scored 1710 runs in 1976. He also hit 9 centureis in a year surpassing the 7 centuries scored by Arvinda Desilva and Viv Richards. By scoring 665 runs in a three test match series he broke the record of Zaheer Abbas ( 1978-79 ) of most runs being scored by a Pakistani. He became the first player in Test history to have been dismissed 3 times in the 190's, with all three innings coming in 2006. Hitting nine centuries in a calender year is not a kid's play and Mohammad Yousuf did that elegantly

Mohammad Yousuf 11 1788 99.33 9/ 3

Roger Federer
Piled up records this year , no other player in tennis circuit could match him except Nadal and that too in clay only.

Grand Slams Wins
2006 Australian Open Cyprus Marcos Baghdatis 5-7, 7-5, 6-0, 6-2
2006 Wimbledon Spain Rafael Nadal 6-0, 7-6(5), 6-7(2), 6-3
2006 U.S. Open United States Andy Roddick 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1
Runner Up
2006 French Open Spain Rafael Nadal 1-6, 6-1, 6-4, 7-6(4)
Other wins of 2006

Fernando Alonso

Alonso became the youngest driver, at 25, to win back-to-back F1 world championships. The Spaniard won six of nine races to start the season and seven total, including an emotional victory in his home Grand Prix at Barcelona. He'll also be remembered as the driver who dethroned Schumacher. Alonso had to work very hard to win the 2006 championship, he was way ahead of schumacher in the early races but the German legend bouced back to make a great finish for this season.
It was the Japanese Grand Prix that sealed the win for Alonso as in this race schumacher suffered a mechanical problem. Alonso will be racing for McLaren from 2007.

Tiger Woods

He is what Federer is to Tennis, Schumacher was to F1, Sachin is to cricket in short god of Golf. He has 12 major career Major Victories and is chasing Jack Nicklaus 's 18. Earl Woods, 74, Tiger's father and the guiding force behind his career, died of cancer in early May.In June, Tiger returns to the links and fails to make the cut for the U.S. Open by three strokes. He had made the cut in 39 consecutive majors, a record he shares with Jack Nicklaus.
Tiger snaged his third British Open claret jug with an 18-under-par score. His 11th major win, he won by two strokes over Chris DiMarco, who also recently lost a parent (his mother on July 4). Tiger won the Buick Open in August becoming the youngest player to win 50 PGA tournaments. Jack Nicklaus, who had previously held the record, had been 33 years old when he snagged his 50th title. Tiger cruises through the last round of the PGA Championship to win the title 5 strokes behind his closest competitor and with an 18-under-par score for the tourney. He racks up his 12th major tournament win and continues his pursuit of Jack Nicklaus's records—the Golden Bear had 18 major victories in his career.
