Torres moves to Anfield

Benitiz's three years at Liverpool have been full of signings, the shopping bills more than any other manager in Liverpool history. The items in shopping bag have been little more than exciting and their performances have not been the same either. Especially Liverpool I have always felt has been into a de-glammed shopping mode which obviously produces less excitement than buying stars. Finally it seems to have made the right choice by picking up Fernando Torres from Athletico Madrid with a 20 Million pounds price tag.

Torres is undoubtedly the best of Spanish next-gen lot. Last year ManUtd had a chance to catch hold of this guy but talks failed to materialize. Although I am happy that he chose Liverpool as this makes EPL a more level playing field, Liverpool for sure needs to rise above the Steven Gerrard influence and have more players other than him running the game. Players like Crouch and Kyut have shown promise but nothing more than that. Winning EPL requires a year long performance which Liverpool has failed to deliver.

Torres sure has the potential to be Liverpool great like Alan Hansen or Gerrard what he will require is a great team support. Good that after Henry going to LA Liga EPL finally has something to compensate for him, but I am sure he will be lot more than a mere compensation, putting my money on Torres to be the Bestest Player in the coming years.

Torres gives hope to Liverpool Fans, and he for sure will never walk alone now.

Memoria - Euro' 04 Quarter Final

This has to be one of the best international matches that I have seen. England plays Portugal in the quarter finals of the Euro – 04 in front the elated Porto crowd and the worth for their money was enormous.

The match started with national anthems followed by supporters’ emotional howls. And it wasn’t a long wait to make some amendments in the scores. It was two minutes and twenty four seconds and Owen flicks one past Ricardo to give English an early lead. And Portuguese already sniff that tickle down then nerve and a little sense of urgency! James denies a 20 yard from Maniche and soon after Nuno Gomes misses the far post. The English are already forming castles, and its less than 20 minutes. And a sudden counter attack from Lampard almost makes it two, wishing Owen could have converted that one as well.

What next, the poster boy of English camp Wayne Rooney twists his ankle, it looks serious and he is replaced by Darius Vassell. And now, Deco, Ronaldo turn to shooting modes, making life difficult for the English defenders. Deco-Gerrard tackle and the first yellow card of the game flashed, careful Stevie!

Half Time almost there and Gary Neville toggles Ronaldo and gets booked. Figo takes the strike from the edge of the box, unfortunately for his team, high and wide.

Half Time reads England one Portugal nil.

Portuguese get some sort of pep-up snacks and they come back firing the English defenders yet again. Figo shoots one in almost no time, but he is not having a merry time at all, still the team seems to make an impact. Next booking is for Costinha, dirty-tackling Beckham.

64 Minutes Simao in Costinha out and inside three minutes he almost stole the much awaited equalizer. A Portugal corner followed by an English corner, but no change in scorelines. Now, English barter Hargreaves on, Gerrard off.

GOAL!! Six minutes to full time and Postiga’s head puts the cross from Ronaldo behind the bars, and its 1-1. Game On!! The crowd has come alive (inside and outside the TV). What else now to pamper the epic, a disallowed 90 minute ‘Cross Bar-Line-Out’ Goal by Campbell. And Ronaldo’s excellence is curbed by Phil Neville and he gets a yellow.

Extra time on and the physical energy levels are forced to maintain, that’s for the players, the fans had to manage the emotional energy levels! 110 minutes and Rui Costa decides that there should be no penalty business in Portugal and he shoos away Phil Neville for an absolute 20 yard treat and it’s a GOAL!! Portugal 2 England 1. But Lampard believes that penalties are still an option and in 5 minutes from a Terry Flick, he tells the Portuguese that the English are game for Penalties.

A good for nothing free kick from David Beckham and its time, we're going to penalties.

Beeeeeeeeeep!

David Beckham! What have you done?

England 0 Portugal 0:

Deco, Confidence!

England 0 Portugal 1:

Owen, lousy! Thanks Ricardo for moving out of the way of this straight hit, thanks a lot!

England 1 Portugal 1:

Simao, no problems whatsoever!

England 1 Portugal 2:

Lampard, straight and low down the middle, level!

England 2 Portugal 2:

Rui Costa, the star misses it, mimics Beckham!

England 2 Portugal 2:

Terry does it with Perfection!

England 3 Portugal 2:

Ronaldo, nerves and a great penalty!

England 3 Portugal 3:

Owen Hargreaves, came in for Gerrard, and he doesn’t miss it!

England 4 Portugal 3:

Maniche, a miss means exit, and he doesn’t disappoint!

England 4 Portugal 4:

Sudden death is on Ashley Cole is next, Advantage England!

England 5 Portugal 4:

Postiga keeps hopes alive and puts it behind the bars!

England 5 Portugal 5:

Darius Vassell! Nooo, you came in for Rooney! And you missed it!

England 5 Portugal 5:

And Ricardo himself comes on to take the all crucial penalty, and he does it, Portugal has won a mind blogging contest, this is unbelievable football!

Alas! I can’t epitomize all the excitement in words, but for all those who saw it live, you can still feel that moment!

Lets discuss something different

Cricket, cricket cricket……if India wins then we discuss cricket, if we loses then too we discuss it, even if we are not playing then we are discussing either about past performances or future events. Every one in our country is an in born expert with ready to implement strategies for improving Indian team’s performance, with media playing a great proactive role as a self-imposed mediator. Last night I was just wondering where in the world a game evoke such strong responses, like cricket does in India. The only country (there may be many) which comes to my mind is England with there national Football Team gives Indian Cricket Team a huge competition in nearly every aspect of game. Although the popularity of EPL, sometimes overshadows there national team, but still whenever they play, they evoke huge and extreme responses from Fans as well as from Media.
Coming to similarities between Indian Cricket Team and English Football Team, following points can be said:
1. Both of them have only once in there history, won something significant India 1983 WC and England 1966 WC.
2. Both are one of the world most hyped teams in there respective field, with most of the players enjoying demi-god status among masses.
3. There captain and coach (manager in Football) are the most famous whipping boys of the whole country.
4. And most importantly there performance evoked emotions which can match the joy of India’s Independence Day celebration and sadness of Princess Diana’s death.

Since we have already analyzed Indian cricket team in and out lets have a look at England Football Teams progress chart.

FLASHBACK
Last two big tournaments they have played in WC 2006 and Euro 2004, they were eliminated in Quarter finals stage, both times by Portugal and the last good match(according to me and my memory) they played were somewhere in 2003 when they
defeated Germany 5-1 in Germany itself, with Michael Owen scoring a hat trick. Before WC they have one of the most boring coaches of the world in Sven-Goran Erickson, and most photogenic captains in David Beckham and after that they have Steve Mclaren, who tries a lot but delivers very little and John Terry an inspirational captain for Chelsea, but so far he is not able to inspire his fellow team mates.

And the last piece of action was in Euro 08 qualifiers where they were beaten by Croatia and held goalless by Macedonia and Israel which makes there qualifying a little tough jobJ.

TEAM
Player by player you see, England have got a fabulous team. You have John Terry and Rio Ferdinand as Center back, with Jamie Carragher as a back up. Gary Neville as Right back and Ashley Cole as left back, man that’s a one helluva of a defence. If that’s not enough lets have a look at Mid Fielders, you have got Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard as two options for Central Midfielder, Owen Hargreaves and Michael Carrick for Holding one, David Beckham and Aaron Lennon on the right hand side, with Joe Cole (if he is fit) on the left side of the field. Then you have Wayne Rooney playing as link up man, the only problem being that of central striker as Michael Owen has got long term injury concern, even then they have Andy Johnson, Darren Bent, Defoe and the evergreen Crouchy. So in all it’s a pretty decent team which is expected to win if not all then most of the matches, especially against team like Israel and Macedonia.

PROBLEMS
Well here comes the biggest catch, the difference between Cricket and Football i.e. the role of manager or coach. In Cricket it’s basically the captain who takes the call while coach role is more of a guider or a mentor while in Football it’s the manager who decides the strategy and player’s role is to implement that strategy (ideally speaking).

So in spite of having such a good team why is it that England always flatters to deceive, the first reason which is quite obvious is the lack of co-ordination among players as most of them plays for different club and naturally it becomes difficult to adjust to each others game. However this problem is faced by players of most of the country so it’s not really a excuse factor. Then where the hell is the problem, problem is in strategy, what we find that Mclaren tinkers too much with the formation and his obsession to play Gerrard and Lampard together , which more often than not result in Gerrard playing on the right. Why doesn’t he realize that Gerrard is their best player in the team and needs to be play in the center of the park where he is most deadly, he is the one who can sets up the game and with Rooney to likes to dig deep they both can create a lots of opportunities for the Striker. Other thing which people said (I don’t agree with it) is the lack of passion among players when they play for England as they play for there clubs. Well I won’t like want to comment on this stuff.

So that all about England , I badly want them to play in Euro 2008, all though the journey looks tough but somehow they have the habit of crossing the line only in the last stretch.

Is this the beginning of the End??

Is this the beginning of the End??
That’s was the lingering thought in my mind when they lost to Valencia over weekend , but suddenly after watching them against Liverpool it seems like a reality waiting to just explode.
Sometimes I wonder, who is success biggest competitor, is it fear of failure or something like that, but watching the events unfold at Barcelona I have to the conclude that its success itself which is its biggest competitor. Can you imagine a team which is Spanish Champ plus European Champion and most important of all the world best Football Team, even Jose Mourinho admits that, fighting like that. Something, somewhere is seriously wrong. I don’t know who is at the wrong side nor I am interested in knowing , I don’t care what is happening between Eto and Rjikard , what matters to me is football and at present I don’t think they are playing that good football.
Coming to last Night match Liverpool once again showed why they are considered so esteemed in Europe, they never play spectacular football just keeps the basic right, absorbs pressure and hit other teams on the break. The turning point of the match was undoubtedly the blunder by Valdes, the header by Bellamy was nothing but easy catch, but he made total mess of that. That was the moment which turned the match upside down; it not only gave Liverpool confidence but also completely broke the Barca’s confidence. Second half was no contest, completely dominated by Liverpool.Barca seems like a demoralized side.
Coming to individual performance Momo Sisoko was outstanding running everywhere, Gerrard as usual consistent, Bellamy with his pace always created problems for barca defense, but that golf swing which he did after scoring that goal, will be the one most remembered. Otherwise it was clinical performance by Rafa’s sides.
Barcelona nothing much to write about, deco was brilliant, ronaldinho and saviola good whenever they got the ball. The problem for me was the supply from Mid field which wasn’t up to the mark. Defense has never been Barcelona strength, but if goalkeeper is also in a state of nervous disorder, then it can be a big problem. So is it all over for the reigning champs, not for me …ya its difficult to defeat Liverpool in Anfield, but Barcelona in form can score in any stadium around the world. But the question is of the psychological state they are in, they are looking vulnerable and that is the problem. Eto, in probability will be back for the second leg, is he that crucial link they are missing so badly . Only time will answer that question , but till then we all pray that sanity prevails in Nou Camp because we don’t want the end to happen so soon,as End usually is ugly and Barca plays this Beautifull game real beautifully.

Few Moment of Brilliance

The whole of weekend I was thinking what to write, Aaj Tak makes you to write about Madan Lal and his expert comments on cricket, ESPN about Australia demise and PHL, Star Sports about FA Cup, Ten Sports about WWE, Zee-Sports about National Football League and lastly DD sports about the poor old National Games. What a mess I was in, so as usual what happened I couldn’t write anything.
Come Monday I came to office expecting nothing…but then u have a look at sportolysis, read the wonderful articles and the motivation is back. So to keep this inspirational stuff going on I would like to share some defining images which I just can’t ever forget.
Centurion, 2003 World Cup, a dream Match India vs Pakistan –Batsmen on strike Sachin Tendulkar , bowler Wasim Akram , a perfect delivery , pitched just short of good length and was curling in , Little Master goes on to the backfoot and then you heard Robin Jackman’s voice over Microphone “Ah what a shot , this has bisected the gap between Mid Off and Covers ”. This was the best back foot cover drive I have ever seen in Cricket and mind you it still remain the Best. Also that exaggerated follow through by Sachin was the defining moment of World Cup 2003.
From Centurion to Istanbul, 25th May, Champions League Final Milan Vs Liverpool. Milan 2003 champions were the heavy favorites and they seem to be on the path to glory again by smacking 3 goals in the first half against the lackluster and the hapless Liverpool. Second half and nobody even gave them a chance, to score 3 goals against an Italian side is next to impossible. But then comes the 6 minutes of madness , lead by the inspirational skipper Steven Gerrard they score 3 times in 6 minutes to tie the score and they reached the Penalty shootout no one can even doubt the result. Pool were the European champs and that image of Gerrard waving towards Liverpool fans after scoring the first goal was the unforgettable moment of inspiration.
To be continued…………..
